Results of a New Study on Macular Degeneration

Written by Dr. Vasileios Skouteris, MD, FEBO4 November 20262 min read

Encouraging results have been reported for a new drug for the treatment of age-related macular degeneration. Dr. Skouteris is taking part in this study, which is being conducted at dozens of centres across Europe, as a sub-investigator through Oxford University Hospital. The aim of this new drug is to be given every three months, thereby reducing the burden of monthly injections. Many research groups share this approach, since it will lower costs but, above all, it will reduce the volume of patients that hospitals have to manage, which is becoming increasingly unsustainable worldwide.

The patient will benefit just as much: instead of having one injection every month, with the new drugs they may not need another injection for two, three or even more months.

Dr Skouteris is also taking part in a second study aiming at the same desired outcome, which is being carried out by a different research group.
