Please follow the aftercare instructions below after your intravitreal injection to avoid a possible infection or other serious complication from the injection:

On the day of the injection

Do not wear make-up on the day of the injection.

To avoid contamination, if you wish to clean the area around the eye, make sure your hands are clean and use a new tissue each time.

Over the following days

To reduce the risk of infection, avoid getting water in the injected eye for 48 hours.

You should be aware that slightly blurred vision is common after an intravitreal injection. It is often described as black spots moving in the eye. These symptoms usually settle after a few days. Sometimes you may see black bubbles immediately after the injection. These disappear within 2 days.

When to contact the doctor immediately

Any symptoms should start to improve after the first 24 hours. If you think this is not happening, or if you have any of the following symptoms:

  • Pain in the eye
  • Redness that increases over time
  • Swollen eyelids

Please contact us on (+30) 210 747 2777 during the centre’s opening hours (8:00am to 8:00pm) or on the on-call number (+30) 694 599 3598, which is available 24 hours a day.

Frequently Asked Questions about Intravitreal Injections

What are the side effects after an eye injection?

Common and harmless effects include a red patch on the white of the eye, a gritty or burning feeling for 1 to 2 days, and small bubbles or floaters that settle within a few days. Eye pressure may rise temporarily. Serious complications, such as infection or retinal detachment, are rare but need immediate treatment.

When should I contact the doctor immediately after the injection?

Contact us immediately if, over the following days, you develop pain that is getting worse, redness that worsens instead of fading, reduced vision, severe sensitivity to light, discharge or a shadow in your field of vision. These may be signs of infection or another complication, which are treated more effectively the earlier they are diagnosed.

Can I drive after an intravitreal injection?

Driving is not recommended on the day of the injection. Your vision may be blurred because of the dilating drops, the anaesthetic or bubbles in the eye, and there is often some discomfort. It is best to come with someone or take a taxi. You can usually drive again from the next day, provided your vision is clear.

What should I avoid in the first few days after the injection?

For the first 2 to 3 days, avoid rubbing your eye, wearing eye make-up, swimming in a pool or the sea, and dusty places. Do not let water get directly into the eye, and use only the drops your doctor has given you. You can return to most everyday activities from the next day.
